Anna Kruse is a Swedish-Danish jazz and contemporary art-song vocalist with an unusually singular artistic focus: for over a decade, she has composed settings of Edith Södergran's poetry across wildly different contexts, from big band to string quartet to electronic production to symphony orchestra. For fans of vocal jazz that doubles as literary art, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and Nordic experimentalism.
Short bio
Hi there, and welcome! I’m Anna Kruse, a Swedish-Danish singer based in Copenhagen. For more than twenty years, I’ve been writing music and melodies inspired by the beautiful poetry of Edith Södergran. Her words feel as fresh and relevant today as ever, and I’ve made it my mission to help spread them to more ears and hearts around the world. I’m hoping this platform can bring me a bit closer to you — the people who actually listen to the music. The songs live somewhere between jazz and folk, with room for both reflection and spontaneity. Can’t wait to share it all with you!
Full bio
Anna Kruse is a Swedish-Danish vocalist, composer, and artist working at the intersection of poetry, music, and cultural memory. Trained at Ingesund's Academy of Music and Copenhagen's Rytmiske Musikkonservatorium, Kruse has built a singular career around an obsessive creative mission: setting the work of Edith Södergran, the Finland-Swedish poet (1892-1923), to music. Over more than a decade, she has written over 60 songs rooted in Södergran's poetry, exploring it through radically different sonic contexts—big band arrangements, string quartets, choirs, wind ensembles, electronic production, and most recently, symphony orchestra. Rather than revisit the same material, Kruse treats each project as a distinct artistic statement, expanding the emotional and textural possibilities of the poems with each iteration.
Her discography reflects this trajectory. The early albums Lyckokatt (2009) and Champagne Fötter (2013) established her as a singular voice in Nordic jazz and art song. The trilogy that followed—Himlens Rand (2017), Barndomsträd (2021), and her most recent work Ringen (2025)—continued this deepening engagement with Södergran's world, each supported by collaborations that deepen the work's gravity. She has worked extensively with actress Stina Ekblad, who appears as a reader and vocalist on multiple projects, lending dramatic heft to Södergran's words. Recent singles like the 2023 single "Glädjen är en fjäril" (with Ekblad, Gunnar Halle, and Nicholas Kingo) and the Edith Electro EP (2022) show Kruse willing to push into experimental electronic territory while maintaining the poetic core.
The most recent album Ringen (October 2025) marks another chapter in this ongoing conversation with Södergran—a full orchestral realization of the poet's vision, recorded in high-resolution audio. Through consistent, unflinching artistic focus over two decades, Kruse has created something rare: a body of work that honors deep literary engagement while refusing to calcify, remaining open to new sonic and collaborative possibilities.
